Emerald Campdraft

Emerald Campdraft is a premier horsemanship competition attracting experienced riders from across the region. The event draws approximately 500–800 visitors from across Central Highlands and beyond.

Emerald is ideally positioned as your base — quality accommodation, reliable services, and easy access to regional attractions. Many visitors extend their stay to explore the Sapphire Gemfields, Lake Maraboon, and the heritage sites that make Central Queensland special.

Cattle Work Turned Competition

Campdrafting traces its origins to the everyday cattle work of Australian stockmen. In the Central Highlands, where vast grazing properties stretch across the black-soil plains of the Nogoa and Comet river systems, cutting cattle from a mob and drafting them through gates was a daily skill long before it became a competitive sport. Emerald’s campdraft evolved naturally from these working yards, with neighbouring stations issuing informal challenges that eventually became organised events.

By the latter decades of the twentieth century, the Emerald Campdraft had established itself as one of the more prestigious drafts in the Central Queensland circuit. The event attracted not only local riders but seasoned competitors chasing points on the national campdraft circuit. Prize money grew, sponsors came on board, and the standard of horsemanship lifted with every passing year.

What sets the Emerald draft apart is the quality of its cattle and the authenticity of its atmosphere. Unlike some coastal events that lean heavily on entertainment, Emerald’s campdraft remains firmly rooted in stockmanship — a celebration of the partnership between horse and rider that built this region.

Dawn to Dusk at the Draft

A campdraft day starts in the half-light before sunrise. Riders are already at the yards, saddling up and walking their horses to settle nerves — both equine and human. The cattle are penned and sorted, and the judges take their positions overlooking the camp and the course. By the time the first competitor enters the yard, the grandstand is filling with spectators clutching thermoses and programs.

Each run is a two-part test. In the camp, the rider must cut a single beast from the mob and hold it within a marked area, demonstrating control and anticipation. Then the beast is released through the gate and the rider must guide it around a course of pegs in the open arena, judged on accuracy, horsemanship, and the degree of difficulty presented by the beast itself.

Between runs, the atmosphere is relaxed and sociable. You’ll hear animated discussions about horse breeding lines, the temperament of particular cattle, and which riders are looking sharp. The canteen does a roaring trade in steak sandwiches and cold drinks, and kids weave between the horse trucks playing their own improvised games.

The finals are the highlight of the weekend, with the top-scoring riders going head to head on fresh cattle. The crowd noise builds to a crescendo during a clean run, and the presentation ceremony afterwards is a proud affair — trophies, sashes, and prize money that can run into the thousands.

The Campdraft Crowd

Campdrafting draws a fiercely loyal community. The riders themselves range from young jackaroos and jillaroos getting their first taste of competition to veteran stockmen who have been drafting for decades. Many competitors travel a circuit that takes in drafts from Charters Towers to Rockhampton, and Emerald is a valued stop on that route.

The event also brings horse trainers, stock agents, and rural equipment suppliers who set up trade displays alongside the arena. Families are the backbone of the crowd — grandparents, parents, and children all playing their part, whether it’s helping in the yards, running the scoreboard, or cheering from the rail.

For visitors from outside the rural world, a campdraft offers an unfiltered glimpse into the working culture of inland Queensland. The skills on display are real and practical, the people are genuine, and the atmosphere is unlike anything you’ll find in a city arena.

Fuelling Up for the Draft

Ground-side catering at a campdraft is hearty and no-nonsense. Expect thick steak sandwiches, loaded burgers, hot chips, and baked potatoes from the canteen. The volunteer-run barbecue is a social hub in its own right, and you’ll often find homemade cakes and biscuits at the CWA stall if one is operating.

In Emerald, counter meals at the local pubs are generous and well-priced — perfect for a group dinner after a long day in the dust. For something lighter, the cafes on Egerton Street offer fresh salads, wraps, and excellent coffee. Pizza and Chinese takeaway are also available if you’d rather eat in after a tiring day.

If you’re self-catering, the supermarkets and Emerald’s quality butcher shops mean you can throw together a proper feed at your apartment. Many campdraft visitors swear by a cold beer and a home-cooked steak after the final run of the day.

Insider Advice for Campdraft Visitors

Wear boots, not thongs — The yards and arena surrounds are working areas with cattle, horses, and uneven ground. Enclosed footwear is essential for safety and comfort.

Bring a camp chair — Seating at the arena can be limited, and the best viewing spots are often unofficial. A portable chair lets you pick your vantage point and stay comfortable all day.

Watch the novice class first — If you’re new to campdrafting, the novice division is the ideal introduction. Runs are a little slower and the commentary often explains the scoring system in detail.

Top up fuel before you leave town — Depending on the venue, the nearest service station may be back in Emerald. Fill up before heading out and carry extra water in the vehicle.

Stay for the presentations — The Saturday evening presentation and social is where the real character of the campdraft community comes through. Even if you didn’t compete, it’s worth attending for the stories alone.
