Anakie is a small gemfields village 35km south of Emerald, close to Rubyvale. Known for fossicking sites, rural charm, and creative locals, it’s an ideal half-day or full-day excursion into Central Queensland’s gemstone country.

Getting to Anakie from Emerald

The drive south from Emerald to Anakie takes roughly 45 minutes via the Rubyvale Road. The landscape opens into farmland and grazing country as you descend toward the gemfields. Anakie sits at the quieter end of the gemfields cluster, making it less crowded than Rubyvale but equally rewarding for travellers seeking authentic local experiences.

Fossicking & Gemstone Hunting

Anakie’s main drawcard is sapphire and zircon fossicking. Several licensed fossicking sites allow visitors to sift through gem-bearing earth under guidance. No experience necessary—families enjoy the activity, and the thrill of finding a genuine sapphire or zircon keeps visitors engaged for hours. Most sites charge modest fees and provide tools and buckets.

Cafes, Galleries & Local Artisans

Anakie hosts several small galleries and craft studios showcasing local artisans—jewellers working with locally found gemstones, painters, and ceramicists. The main street has a relaxed vibe with a café or two serving good coffee and simple meals. This is where you’ll encounter genuine Central Highlands hospitality, often from multi-generational gemfields families.

Picnicking & Scenic Walks

The surrounding countryside offers pleasant walking opportunities through open farmland. Pack a picnic and find a quiet spot to enjoy the rural landscape. Early morning or late afternoon light is particularly striking across the valleys.

Pairing with Rubyvale

Most visitors combine Anakie with nearby Rubyvale, the larger gemfields town with more facilities. A full day exploring both towns gives you both the authentic charm of Anakie and the slightly more developed amenities of Rubyvale.

Only stayed one night for an event, but can’t say enough about this little gem. I’ve come to expect poor pillows in hotels be was very happily proved wrong here.

The apartment was very well equipped with everything you could need – coffee machine, washer and dryer, full kitchen. Perfect!
