Getting Your Sapphire Set: A Local Guide

You’ve fossicked a sapphire. Now comes the part that transforms a rough stone into something wearable: cutting and setting. This is where local expertise becomes invaluable.

The Gemfields has a strong community of cutters and jewellers. Many have spent decades perfecting their craft. These aren’t mass-production operations; they’re artisans who understand the specific characteristics of local stones and how to maximise colour and brilliance. Working with someone local has obvious advantages: you see work-in-progress, discuss design directly, and support someone in the community where you found your stone.

Finding a cutter: Rubyvale is the hub. Most established cutters work from studios in or near town. Visit a few, look at their portfolio work, and ask about their approach. A good cutter spends time assessing your stone, discussing what’s possible, and explaining the trade-offs. Some sapphires benefit from deeper cutting to maximise colour; others need careful orientation to reveal clarity.

Cost expectations: A rough sapphire fossicked from the ground requires cutting before it becomes a gem. This process, called lapidary work, typically costs $100-400 depending on stone size and cutting complexity. A well-cut stone shows dramatically more colour and brilliance than an uncut equivalent.

Setting options: Once cut, the stone needs a setting. Pre-made settings in standard designs—solitaire rings, pendants, earrings—are available off-the-shelf at local jewellers for $200-600 depending on metal and complexity. Custom settings cost more but give you complete control. A custom engagement ring or statement piece runs $500-1500 for precious metal plus labour.

Metal choices matter. Gold is traditional and beautiful. Platinum is more expensive but incredibly durable—ideal for everyday rings. Silver works for pendants and earrings but scratches more easily in rings. Most local jewellers work primarily in gold and platinum.

Timeframes: Pre-made settings can be completed within days. Custom work takes longer. A completely custom design, from concept to finished piece, typically takes 4-8 weeks depending on complexity and the jeweller’s schedule.

Certification: Local cutters can provide documentation of stone weight and basic characteristics. For serious pieces, professional gemological certification adds credibility and insurance value.

The local advantage: A jeweller in Rubyvale has cut hundreds of Gemfields sapphires. They understand the specific characteristics of stones from this region. That knowledge translates directly into a better finished product.

My suggestion: Spend time with your stone before committing to a setting. Then visit a cutter, discuss options, and trust their expertise.
