Driving Distances to Emerald

Emerald is a genuine inland regional centre — the distances below are significant, so plan your journey in advance.

Coming from Rockhampton

The Capricorn Highway is the most common approach to Emerald — a straightforward 270km drive west from Rockhampton. The road is sealed and well-maintained, passing through Blackwater approximately 190km from Rockhampton, which is the main fuel and rest stop along the way. Allow three hours in normal conditions. Road trains and mining vehicles are common on this stretch — allow plenty of space when overtaking.

Coming from Brisbane

The drive from Brisbane is approximately 900km and is best broken into two days. The most direct inland route runs via Toowoomba, then north on the Leichhardt Highway through Wandoan and Theodore to Biloela, then north-west on the Dawson Highway through Moura to Emerald. Biloela (approximately 6 hours from Brisbane) makes a comfortable overnight stop. Alternatively, take the Bruce Highway north to Rockhampton, then the Capricorn Highway west — slightly longer but on wider roads, which suits caravans.

Flying to Emerald

Emerald Airport (IATA: EMD) is serviced by QantasLink with regular flights from Brisbane — flight time is approximately 90 minutes. The airport is located approximately 5km south of the town centre. There is no public bus service from the airport; hire cars are available from major agencies at the terminal. If you are staying with us, let us know your arrival time and we can advise on the best transfer options.

On-Site Parking

Emerald Inn provides free on-site parking for all guests. The car park accommodates standard vehicles, utes, and 4WDs. If you are towing a caravan or trailer, or arriving in an oversized vehicle, contact us in advance and we will arrange suitable parking. FIFO workers who leave their vehicles with us during roster periods can do so at no additional charge — our car park is well-lit and on-site.

Road Conditions & Travel Tips

The sealed highways connecting Emerald to major centres are well-maintained and suitable for all vehicle types including caravans. Secondary roads to attractions such as the Sapphire Gemfields and Blackdown Tableland may be unsealed and can be affected by rain — check conditions before departing via the Queensland TMR road conditions website or the RACQ road report service.

Wildlife — particularly kangaroos and cattle — is a genuine hazard at dawn and dusk on regional roads. Reduce speed, use high beams where possible, and avoid driving on unfamiliar rural roads after dark where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive from Brisbane in one day?

It is possible but not recommended. Nine to ten hours of driving plus stops makes for an exhausting day. Breaking the journey at Biloela, Moura, or Rockhampton is safer and more comfortable.

Is there a bus or train to Emerald?

Yes — the Spirit of the Outback rail service runs between Rockhampton and Longreach and stops in Emerald. Bus services also operate on this corridor. However, most guests arrive by car or air. Contact us if you need local transport information for your arrival.

What is mobile coverage like on the drive?

Telstra generally provides the most reliable coverage on regional roads in Queensland. Optus and Vodafone can be patchy outside major towns. Download offline maps before you leave if you are relying on your phone for navigation.
