One Week Central Highlands Itinerary
One Week Central Highlands Itinerary — How to Spend One Week Exploring the Central Highlands
Planning your time in Central Highlands can be the difference between a rushed, unsatisfying trip and one that leaves you feeling like you have genuinely experienced what the region has to offer. This itinerary is based on practical experience — the driving distances are realistic, the time allowances are honest, and the suggestions prioritise the experiences that visitors consistently rate as the highlights of their Central Highlands trip.
Before You Start — Practical Preparation
Base yourself at Emerald Inn for the duration of your visit. A central Emerald base gives you easy access to all the attractions on this itinerary while returning each evening to air-conditioned comfort, a proper kitchen, and the town’s services. Stock up on groceries at Woolworths or Coles on arrival — you will want breakfast supplies, water bottles, and snacks for day trips. Fill your fuel tank before each day trip, particularly for the Gemfields and any excursion south. Download offline maps on your phone as mobile coverage can be unreliable in some areas.
Day 1 — Arrival and Orientation
Arrive in Emerald and settle into your accommodation. If you arrive by mid-morning, use the afternoon to orient yourself — drive the main street, locate the supermarkets, and get a sense of the town layout. If time allows, drive out to the Fairbairn Dam lookout (20 minutes) for your first sense of the Central Highlands landscape. The panoramic views across Lake Maraboon, particularly in afternoon light, provide a spectacular introduction to the region. Return to Emerald for dinner at one of the local pubs.
Day 2 — Sapphire Gemfields
Depart Emerald by 8am for the Sapphire Gemfields at Rubyvale, approximately 45 minutes west. If this is your first visit, book a guided fossicking tour — the guides know where to dig, provide all equipment, and teach you how to identify rough sapphires. A half-day tour gives you a thorough introduction. Spend the afternoon browsing Rubyvale’s gem shops, where you can see cut sapphires, buy jewellery, and get any finds from your fossicking session assessed and potentially cut. Return to Emerald by late afternoon.
Day 3 — Fairbairn Dam and Lake Maraboon
A more relaxed day focused on the water. Drive to Fairbairn Dam (20 minutes) for fishing, kayaking, or lakeside picnicking. If you fish, target barramundi in the warmer months or yellowbelly year-round. The dam wall area and rocky points are productive for shore-based fishing. If you prefer a less active day, simply enjoy the lakeside setting, the birdlife, and the vastness of the inland water body. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it, returning to Emerald in the late afternoon.
Day 4 — Blackdown Tableland National Park
A full-day excursion to Blackdown Tableland, approximately 90 minutes south of Emerald. This sandstone plateau rises 600 metres above the surrounding plains and supports a unique ecosystem including rainforest pockets and endemic plant species. Walking tracks range from short interpretive walks to longer escarpment walks with panoramic views. Aboriginal rock art sites are accessible via marked tracks. The access road includes an unsealed section — check conditions before departing. Pack water, lunch, and proper walking shoes. Allow a full day including driving time.
Day 5 — Return to the Gemfields or Rest Day
If your first Gemfields visit left you wanting more, return for a second day of fossicking — perhaps trying a different area or technique. Alternatively, use this as a rest day in Emerald: visit the botanic gardens, explore the town’s cafes, visit the aquatic centre, or simply rest and prepare for the next excursion. Long trips benefit from built-in rest days, and Emerald has enough low-key activities to fill a relaxed day.
Day 6 — Carnarvon Gorge (Overnight Recommended)
For the most rewarding experience, plan an overnight stay near Carnarvon Gorge. The drive south takes approximately three hours. Arriving by mid-morning gives you the afternoon for walking. The Art Gallery track (5.6km one way) is the must-see highlight. Camp at the national park camping ground or stay at Takarakka Bush Resort.
Day 7 — Carnarvon Gorge Morning and Return
If you stayed overnight, use the morning for additional walking tracks — the Moss Garden and Cathedral Cave are both excellent. Depart by midday for the three-hour return drive to Emerald, arriving in the late afternoon with time to pack and prepare for departure the following morning.
Practical Tips for This Itinerary
Start day trips early — particularly in the warmer months, morning is the most comfortable time for outdoor activities. Carry at least two litres of water per person per day trip, more in summer. Fuel up in Emerald before each excursion. Check road conditions before any trip that involves unsealed roads. The Gemfields, Fairbairn Dam, and Blackdown Tableland each offer different experiences — try to include at least two in your itinerary for a well-rounded Central Highlands experience.
Where to Stay
Emerald Inn provides the ideal base for this itinerary. Self-contained rooms with kitchenettes allow you to prepare breakfasts and pack day-trip lunches, saving both time and money. The central location makes it easy to start each day trip, and returning to a comfortable, air-conditioned room after a day outdoors is consistently appreciated by visitors who have spent the day in the Central Highlands heat.
