Location

Established in 1879, Emerald is located on the Nogoa River 263 km west of Rockhampton and 909 km from Brisbane (via Rockhampton). It is a typical thriving regional rural and commercial centre with a backbone of livestock farming, agricultural cropping, cotton and mining and the surrounding area contains the largest sapphire gemfields in the world.

The town is serviced by an excellent regional airport, located approximately 5 minutes from the CBD and with 2-3 flights a day by Qantas Link from Brisbane, Emerald is easily accessible.

The Central Highlands region has a rich tapestry of historic features and has an ever increasing focus as the central hub for the Bowen Basin, a world renowned coal mining region.

Located nearby, the Sapphire Gemfields offer visitors the opportunity to strike it rich fossicking for gems or within an easy drive enjoy the magnificent beauty of Carnarvon Gorge and other spectacular national parks in the area.
